Australian Open 2024: Sumit Nagal ends 34-year wait: First Indian after Ramesh Krishnan to beat a seeded player in a Grand Slam Tennis tournament





India's highest level men's singles tennis player Sumit Nagal confirmed his fourth Grand Slam main draw appearance - and his first beginning around 2021 - on Friday, January 12, 2024. The 26-year-old defeated Slovakia's Alex Molcan to arise triumphant 6-4, 6-4 in his last Australian Open 2024 qualifying round at Melbourne Park.




Nagal was off the blocks rapidly, dashing away to a 3-0 lead in the main set by splitting Molcan's serve immediately. The Jhajjar player broke again at 5-4 to take the principal set 6-4. Nagal landed 75% of his most memorable serves and changed over both the break focuses he produced at first asking, which set things up pleasantly for him.

The subsequent set was a neck-to-neck undertaking till the seventh game, after which things turned completely emotional. The match saw an outright exhilarating eighth game in the subsequent set, where Nagal verged on breaking Molcan's serve multiple times and persevered through seven deuces, prior to turning fourth time fortunate and flooding to a 5-3 lead.




He then needed to take a vital break and lost his serve at the cusp of a success. Be that as it may, he returned thundering at 5-4 and broke Molcan again to finish the endearing success.




Earlier, Nagal had advanced through his second qualifying match, beating Edward Winter from Australia in straight sets at the KIA Field. The scoreline had perused 6-3, 6-2 in an uneven match that endured one hour and four minutes.
