Bellingham shines as Real Madrid dominated Gorona 4-0
Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga to five points with a commanding 4-0 victory over surprise title contenders Girona at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The scoring opened with a stunning strike from Vinicius Junior just six minutes into the game, setting the tone for Madrid's dominance. Vinicius then turned provider, delivering a magical assist for Jude Bellingham to double the lead midway through the first half.
Bellingham further extended Madrid's advantage nine minutes into the second half, tapping in a rebound from Vinicius Jr's shot. The Englishman was subsequently substituted, but Madrid's onslaught continued as Rodrygo netted the fourth goal on a swift counterattack, once again with an assist from Vinicius Jr.
Girona's attempts to mount a comeback left them vulnerable at the back, allowing Madrid to capitalize and secure a convincing victory.
Girona started the match with a positive mindset, eager to assert themselves and prove their mettle in what many anticipated to be a pivotal encounter in the title race.
However, just five minutes into the game, Vinicius Jr demonstrated the ruthlessness of competing at the highest level. Despite the presence of four Girona defenders, including right-back Yan Couto, there was a lack of urgency to close him down as he cut in from the left wing. In a moment of brilliance, Vinicius unleashed a shot that found the far corner, catching the opposition off guard.
Throughout the match, Vinicius Jr showcased his confidence and decisiveness, dictating the tempo of the game and asserting Madrid's dominance. His performance extended beyond attacking prowess, as he also displayed defensive diligence by tracking back into his own half to regain possession and maintain Madrid's control of the proceedings.
As the match progressed past the half-hour mark, Vinicius Jr once again showcased his exceptional talent. With a sublime outside-of-the-boot pass, he expertly curved the ball into the space behind Girona's defense, perfectly setting up Bellingham to sprint clear and calmly round goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to find the back of the net.
Vinicius Jr's performance carried added significance as he knew he was being watched by his new national-team coach, Dorival Junior, who was attending his first match at the Bernabeu since his appointment last month. Meanwhile, Vinicius' marker, Couto, a fellow young Brazilian, found the pressure mounting as he struggled to cope with the intensity of the top-of-the-table clash.
In midfield, two of La Liga's most adept deep-lying midfielders, Madrid's Toni Kroos and Girona's Aleix Garcia, engaged in a battle of precision passing. Kroos demonstrated his trademark accuracy with his trademark raking switches of play, while Garcia remained composed and efficient whenever he managed to get on the ball, despite facing intense pressure from the opposition.
