Davis Cup: India qualify for World Group


India defeated Pakistan to qualify for the World Cup stage in Davis Cup 2024.

On Sunday, February 4, Indian team decisively defeated Pakistan 3-0 in the first leg of a five-match game in Islamabad, securing their place in the Davis Cup World Group I.

Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni won the doubles match in the tie, defeating Muzammil Murtaza and Aqeel Khan 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) after winning their individuals two singles matches yesterday. With two singles matches remaining, India won the Davis Cup.

In the opening game of the match, Bhambri and Myneni broke the serve to take the lead and went on to dominate the Pakistani pair. In the opening set, the Indian duo never gave up and defeated their opponents twice more to win 6-2.

While the Indian duo continued to be confident in their strategy, the second set was more evenly contested as Khan and Murtaza maintained good hold of their serves. Midway through the second set, the Pakistani pair saved face and leveled the match at 2-3.

Bhambri/Myneni rapidly broke points to try and break point, but the Pakistani pair countered brilliantly, seizing the opportunity before the game was sealed. From then on, the see-saw fight continued, bringing the set to a tiebreaker at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, the match stayed tied, with the Pakistani duo claiming a slim advantage at 5-4. To secure the victory, though, Myneni and Bhambri correctly predicted three points right away. Prior to N Sriram Balaji giving India a 2-0 lead by beating Aqeel Khan 7-5, 6-3, earlier on Day 1, Ramkumar Ramanathan upset Pakistan's top player Aisham-Ul-Haq Qureshi over three sets, 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), and 6-0. 

Due to the three consecutive victories, the final two singles in the best-of-five tie were deemed meaningless and were not played.
