Mandhana's brilliance goes in vain as RCBW succumb to DCW
In a riveting showdown at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, the Delhi Capitals Women emerged victorious, defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women by 25 runs in the 7th match of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024, held on February 29th, Thursday.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women faced a formidable challenge as the Delhi Capitals Women posted an imposing total of 194/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Shafali Verma set the stage on fire with a blistering knock of 50 runs off just 31 balls, comprising four towering sixes and three boundaries. Alice Capsey contributed a solid 46 runs off 33 balls, while Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen provided crucial impetus with quickfire innings of 32 runs off 16 balls and 36 runs off 16 balls, respectively. Despite efforts from bowlers like Sophie Devine and Nadine de Klerk, who claimed two wickets each, Delhi Capitals Women managed to set a daunting target for the opposition.
In response, the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women got off to a promising start with openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine forging a formidable partnership of 77 runs in 8.3 overs. Skipper Smriti Mandhana exhibited exceptional batting prowess, smashing 74 runs off just 43 balls, including 10 fours and three sixes. Sabbhineni Meghana contributed 36 runs off 31 balls, while Sophie Devine chipped in with 23 runs off 17 balls. However, the batting effort fell short as the Delhi Capitals Women bowlers, led by Jess Jonassen's brilliant spell of 3 wickets for 21 runs, restricted the opposition. Marizanne Kapp and Arundhati Reddy also made significant contributions with two wickets each, conceding 35 runs and 38 runs, respectively.
Despite the valiant efforts of the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women, they succumbed to the pressure of chasing down a challenging target, ultimately falling short by 25 runs. Delhi Capitals Women's victory marked their second win out of three matches in the tournament, while handing RCBW their first loss. Although RCBW displayed commendable resilience in their chase, the daunting target proved insurmountable, highlighting the competitive nature of the WPL 2024.
