India's Myanmar Travel Advisory amidst Security Concerns
India urges its citizens to refrain from traveling to Myanmar's Rakhine state due to the escalating situation and deteriorating conditions in the region.Amid the tense circumstances in Myanmar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) advised on Tuesday against travel to the Rakhine state for Indian citizens. The MEA also recommended immediate departure for Indian nationals residing in the region. The MEA emphasized the deteriorating security situation, disruptions in communication, and shortages of essential goods as reasons for the advisory. India had expressed concerns over the "deteriorating" situation in Myanmar the previous week, advocating for a prompt resolution to the conflict.
The Myanmar crisis was addressed during the MEA's weekly press briefing, where it called for an end to violence and Myanmar's transition to an "inclusive federal democracy." Violence in Myanmar has surged notably in recent months. In what marks the junta's most significant challenge since 2021, three ethnic minority forces launched a coordinated offensive against the military regime in October of last year, capturing towns and military posts. In December of the same year, 151 Myanmarese soldiers fled to Mizoram to escape an armed ethnic group's attack on their camps in Myanmar. Similar incidents occurred, with soldiers crossing the India-Myanmar border to evade attacks by pro-democracy ethnic groups. In November 2023, 104 soldiers sought refuge in Mizoram after their camps were overrun by the People's Defence Force (PDF), a pro-democracy militia. The ongoing situation has led to a substantial influx of Myanmar residents into Mizoram along the Indo-Myanmar border. Three years have passed since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021.
