In a nail-biting finish at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday, March 10th, the Delhi Capitals Women emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins, defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women by just 1 run in the 17th match of the Women's Premier League 2024.

Rodrigues knock helped DCW post big total


Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Delhi Capitals Women put up a formidable total of 181-5 in their allotted 20 overs. The opening pair of Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning set the stage with a brisk partnership of 54 runs in just 6.2 overs. Jemimah Rodrigues then took charge with a scintillating knock of 58 runs off 36 balls, while Alice Capsey contributed a valuable 48 runs off 32 balls. Shreyanka Patil's exceptional spell of bowling for Royal Challengers Bangalore Women saw her claim 4 crucial wickets for 26 runs.

In response, Royal Challengers Bangalore Women faced an early setback with the dismissal of their opener and skipper, Smriti Mandhana, for just 5 runs. However, Sophie Molineux and Ellyse Perry anchored the innings with gritty performances, scoring 33 runs off 30 balls and 49 runs off 32 balls respectively. Richa Ghosh's valiant effort of 51 runs off 29 balls kept Royal Challengers Bangalore Women in contention till the very end. 

Despite a spirited chase, Royal Challengers Bangalore Women fell agonizingly short of the target, losing by just 1 run. Shreyanka Patil's outstanding bowling display once again proved crucial in securing victory for Delhi Capitals Women, as she claimed 4 wickets for 26 runs. 

The match reached a dramatic climax in the final over, with Royal Challengers Bangalore Women needing 17 runs to win. With Richa Ghosh on strike, the tension was palpable. Ghosh smashed a six on the first ball, raising hopes for her team. However, a run-out on the third ball and another run-out off the final delivery sealed the fate of Royal Challengers Bangalore Women.

Heartbreak ensued for Richa Ghosh and her team, but amidst the disappointment, the spirit of sportsmanship prevailed as players from Delhi Capitals Women offered their support and consolation.
