Kaur's heroics propel MIW to victory over Gujarat Giants


In a stunning display of determination and skill, the Mumbai Indians Women's team secured a remarkable 7-wicket victory against the Gujarat Giants in the 16th match of the Women's Premier League 2024, held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, March 9th.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Gujarat Giants were off to a blazing start led by their opener and skipper, Beth Mooney. Mooney showcased her prowess with a quickfire 66 runs off just 35 balls, including 8 boundaries and 3 sixes. Dayalan Hemalatha provided solid support with a brisk 74 off 40 deliveries, while Bharati Fulmali contributed 21 runs off 13 balls. Despite the Giants' strong performance, Mumbai Indians Women's bowlers managed to contain them, with Saika Ishaque leading the attack with 2 crucial wickets for 31 runs. Hayley Matthews, Shabnim Ismail, Pooja Vastrakar, and S Sajana also made valuable contributions, limiting the Giants to a total of 190-7 in their allotted 20 overs.

In response, Mumbai Indians Women's openers, Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews, provided a solid start with a 50-run opening partnership in 6.3 overs. Bhatia's impressive 49 off 36 balls set the stage for what would be a thrilling chase. However, it was skipper Harmanpreet Kaur who stole the show with a sensational innings. Despite facing a challenging situation, Kaur exhibited remarkable composure and power, smashing 95 runs off just 48 balls, which included 10 fours and 5 sixes.

Despite a shaky middle-order performance and an increasing asking rate, Kaur's onslaught ensured Mumbai Indians Women stayed in contention. With the required run rate mounting, Kaur's aggressive batting, coupled with some erratic bowling from Gujarat Giants, saw Mumbai Indians Women sail past the target with ease. Kaur's unbeaten knock of 95 off 48 balls left the Giants stunned and secured a memorable victory for Mumbai Indians Women.

The match will undoubtedly be remembered for Harmanpreet Kaur's stellar performance, showcasing her ability to turn the game on its head and lead her team to victory against all odds. Player of the Match award was also given to the well deserving Harmanpreet Kaur.
