RCBW Edge Past MIW in Thrilling Eliminator
In a nail-biting encounter at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCBW) clinched a thrilling victory over the Mumbai Indians Women (MIW) in the Eliminator match of the Women's Premier League 2024 (WPL).
RCBW won by 5 runs. It's RCBW vs Delhi Capitals in the Final on Sunday, 17th March.
Opting to bat after winning the toss, RCBW faced an early setback as their openers, Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine, departed cheaply, managing only 10 runs each. However, Ellyse Perry once again showcased her class by steering her team out of trouble with a brilliant knock of 66 runs off 50 balls, supported by Wareham's unbeaten 18 runs. Despite a formidable effort from MIW bowlers Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Saika Ishaque, who claimed two wickets each, RCBW posted a competitive total of 135/6 in 20 overs.
In response, MIW started steadily with contributions from their openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews, followed by Nat Sciver-Brunt's brisk 23 off 17 balls. With MIW needing only 20 runs off the last three overs and two set batters, Harmanpreet Kaur and Amelia Kerr, at the crease, victory seemed within reach. However, Shreyanka Patil's crucial dismissal of Kaur and tight bowling from RCBW's Molineux and Sobhana turned the tide in favor of RCBW. Despite Kaur and Kerr's valiant efforts, MIW fell short by just 5 runs, ending their campaign in a heart-wrenching defeat.
RCBW's victory was propelled by Perry's exceptional performance with both bat and ball, earning her the Player of the Match award. Patil's magical spell of 2 wickets for 16 runs, supported by Molineux and Wareham's crucial contributions, played a significant role in restricting MIW's chase. With this win, RCBW advances to the final of the WPL, showcasing the relentless spirit and determination that characterizes the tournament. As the excitement builds up for the final match on Sunday, March 17th, the WPL continues to captivate audiences with its thrilling contests and competitive spirit, further elevating the stature of women's cricket.
